Easter Joy for the Homeless thanks to the families at Hedworth Lane School

6th April 2022A Gill

The People’s Kitchen

On Tuesday Mr Gill drove up to Newcastle with a car packed to the brim full of chocolate Easter Eggs. This lovely expression of love from our school community to those forgotten souls that live on the streets of Newcastle was warmly welcomed by the staff at the Kitchen. If you have not seen it yet, check it out on Facebook. Thank you to everyone that made a donation.

FA Biggest Girls Football Session Ever

Wednesday 9th March saw the Football Association embark on the “Biggest Girls Football Session Ever”.  Hedworth Lane School Girls Football Team participated in the KS2 Girls CVL at Hebburn. We have also made a pledge which commits us to encouraging more girls to take part in football.

We had a fantastic day, winning one and drawing in the other of our two matches.

Celebrations!… Chinese New Year.

18th February 2022A Gill

Celebrations!… Chinese New Year.

On the 1st of February it was Chinese New Year and the children at Hedworth Lane have thoroughly enjoyed celebrating and participating in Chinese traditions over the last couple of weeks. Individual classes have been completing lots of different Chinese New Year activities such as dragon mask-making, cooking vegetable stir-fry and we even had our KS1 classes learning a traditional Chinese dragon dance to perform to the school! The children have loved taking part in these activities and have had lots of fun embracing Chinese New Year 2022…. The Year of the Tiger!

Show Racism the Red Card

17th February 2022K Simpson

Show Racism the Red Card

Classes 1 and 2 have been lucky to have very special visitors – Richard and Alba – from the Show Racism the Red Card charity.  Pupils learned lots about racism, stereotyping and judging others without knowing them.

Pupils listened carefully and responded well, impressing Richard and Alba greatly.  Pupils learned about vocabulary related to race and racism and the history behind some of the racial slurs still heard today.  Pupils understood that the terms are unacceptable and why this is.  We can’t wait for them to come back and work with Class 3 in a couple of weeks.

Can Your Dog Trust You?

17th February 2022K Simpson

Can Your Dog Trust You? Here’s what the Dogs Trust Say…

We are so lucky to have received a visit from the lovely Katie Chapel and her dog, Marshall, from Dogs Trust.  All of the children took part in a special assembly about how to safely approach a dog (with the owner’s permission, of course).

The assembly was followed by a series of workshops about how to be a good dog owner, making sure we give our pets a safe and loving home to live in and ensuring they stay fit and healthy.  Children of all ages enjoyed these sessions and were praised by Katie for their excellent knowledge, attitude and behaviour.

Competition Winner!

14th January 2022A Gill

Competition Winner!

Just before Christmas, Class 3 entered a poetry competition with the theme based on ‘What Christmas means to me’. Our Year 5 pupil, Isabella was shortlisted alongside 6 other pupils from schools across the entire country. After receiving the most likes and shares on Twitter and other social media platforms, she only went and won the top prize ! This means that our school has won a year’s subscription to Reading Plus, which is a programme designed to develop and improve children’s reading fluency and comprehension skills. We cannot wait to get started and see what we can achieve.
Well done Isabella !

What Christmas means to me

The first day I ate a candy canes and played Christmas games.
On the second day it was snowing and glowing.
On the third day I found my elf on the shelf.
On the fourth day I put up my decorations and celebrated.
On the fifth day I opened a jumping jumper.
Day number six there was a sparkling snowstorm.
On day eight I was on a hunt for perfect gifts.
Mince pies nine, let’s spend time with fantastic families.
Ten baubles on the tree! Let’s make creative cookies.
Eleven crackers pulled, it’s scarf knitting day…Yey!
Eeek twelve bells ringing…It’s so exciting!
“Merry Christmas”

This week, the children in Class 1 visited the local Nissan car manufacturing plant in Sunderland. The children had a great time learning about the Japanese firm. They learnt about how a car is planned and engineered and experienced the manufacturing process from design to the finished product.
