Lego League Winners!

6th March 2025Claire Hutchinson

Well done to our fabulous Lego League Team (The Lego Hedz) who were victorious for the second year in a row! Thank you to Miss Watson and Mrs Thompson for all their hard work in preparing for this event!

They have written this article to share their experiences.

We are so proud of you!

The team were excited and nervous heading into the day.
Seeing the other teams made us a little more scared but we were up for the challenge.  We were confident in our design idea and we thought we were in for a chance of winning that part of the day.  We had our first round on the table competing with our robot, TJ was feeling nervous under the pressure but in the end got 95 points which was a really good score for the first round. The first round gave us more confidence as we were able to create codes for the other missions which we got working really quickly.  Our second round gave us 120 points, a great improvement.
Rose thought it was like going into the Dragons Den when the team entered the judges chamber to present their design idea.  The rest of the team felt confident and excited as they were sure their design was a good one.  The team handled the questions from the judges really well, explaining their project clearly. And we did win that award.
Quotes from the team.
Rose “Never, ever give up”
Laura “I am happy for all the other teams winning awards, particularly St Benets who were the overall winners.”
TJ “It’s been so fun, I loved doing the missions.  Our highest score was 140 points.  Everyone was so kind and it was a great atmosphere.”
Leighton  “We never gave up even if we were winning or losing.”
Maya “I thought the day was amazing and unforgettable.  I would go again a million times and hope I get there next year.  I was nervous at first, but I became more comfortable towards the end.”

Year 3 Benchball Tournament

21st February 2025Claire Hutchinson

On Wednesday some of our Year 3 children went to Boldon Comp for a Benchball tournament, we were split into 3 different teams of Hedworth Lane A, B and C and played against two other schools. It was fantastic and was amazing to see what the children had been learning during P.E to help them in these games. There was a lot of excellent team work from all players, so much so one of our teams came joint first with another school and won a medal. Well done Year 3 you played amazingly!

Internet Safety Day 2025

12th February 2025Claire Hutchinson

To mark Internet Safety Day 2025 , we watched an assembly on Cyber Bullying and then had a think about what this means to us and whether we had been affected by it before. All of the children were interested and had lots to add to the discussion. We then used scenario cards to talk about what we would do in different situations and the children wrote some information down about it. We had lots of great ideas and ways to stay safe! Well done everybody.

Stronger Shores

12th February 2025Claire Hutchinson

Year 3 and Year 4 had a fantastic time learning about climate change; what causes it and what it is caused by. They spent time thinking about how to reduce the effects of climate change and what they could do themselves.

They took part in exciting and engaging activities developing their knowledge further. In the first task, they worked collaboratively to put the stages of erosion in order. Secondly, they categorised common and not-so-common organisms into plants, animals, minerals or other. The last and most popular activity was creating their own plastic out of kelp.

Thanks to Blair from the Stronger Shores project, which is an innovation project funded by DEFRA and led by South Tyneside Council exploring the use of natural habitats as a means of protecting our coasts.

Story Raid!

12th February 2025Claire Hutchinson

On Monday our usual lessons were disturbed by three amazing story tellers who raided our school to share with us some exciting tales!

As part of our work on developing Oracy, we listened to the captivating, engaging stories and joined in with actions! Each class heard three tales over the day. Ask your child to tell you their favourite one!

Year 5 and 6 Science

5th February 2025Claire Hutchinson

Year 5 and 6 are learning about electrical circuits this term. We have been thinking of some questions that we would like to test and then building the circuits and experimenting with different components to see what effect changing the variable has. This week we got super technical and turned our Micro:bits into data loggers so that we could test the brightness of a bulb as the voltage changed. We had lots of fun getting hands on and testing out our ideas. Well done everyone.

Early Words Together

27th January 2025Claire Hutchinson

The children in Reception had their second session last week with Jess from The Early Words Program. They enjoyed playing some musical instruments and listening to the different noises that each one made. They then made their own shaker with their grown up to take home and enjoy.
