Children in Year 1 had fun learning alongside their parents and carers. They were joining in with some phonics games and activities. By far the best part of the day was the game of word and sound Bingo when Class 8 and Class 9 won some extra playtime!
Year 5 and 6 had a lot of fun competing in a Year 5 and 6 dodgeball tournament on Friday afternoon. Well done to the winning team and runners up!

After a rigorous recruitment process, involving application forms, shortlisting and formal interviews, we are thrilled to announce that we now have a team of OPAL Ambassadors. They did a brilliant job on their first shift. Watch this space to see how they develop our lunchtime offer over the coming terms!
Class 3 took part in the Be Internet Legends 2024 assembly again this year to mark Safer Internet Day in school and think about how to make smart decisions when we go online . We met all of the familiar characters in the Be Internet Legends family and thought a lot about Internet scams and how they use different ways to hook you in. We are definitely now more aware of the tactics that online scammers use and we can pass this information onto our friends and family so they can stay safe online too. We followed this up with a lesson on how online content can change people’s thoughts, feelings and behaviour both positively and negatively. We even got a shout out from the assembly and we definitely felt positive about hearing our school mentioned in front of so many people. Well done Hedworth Lane!
This topic in DT we have been learning about mechanisms and ‘Making Things Move’. To celebrate Chinese New Year and the Year of the Dragon the year 4’s made their very own dragon mechanism.
Reception children have been practising their stirring, mixing and pouring skills this morning to make pancakes. They had a choice of different toppings to choose from. They were delicious!
In our DT topic this term we have been learning all about seasonal produce. We have tasted different seasonal fruit and vegetables and have now used our tasting session to choose ingredients for a soup recipe. We prepared the vegetables before making the soup by sauteing the vegetables in the pan, then adding stock and allowing the ingredients to cook. Once everything had simmered in the pan for 20 mins, the soup was then blended and we all had a taste. Look out for us applying for Masterchef Junior in the future!
Class 9 learned that The Chinese New Year celebration helps remove the bad and the old and welcome the good. They learned the story of the Zodiac and that this year is the year of the Dragon. They also got to dress up using the traditional Dragon and Lion headset and also used traditional parasols.

As part of our Chinese New Year celebrations in school EYFS and KS1 took part in dance workshops throughout the day. We listened to the story of ‘ The Great Race’ and how and why years are associated with different animals. We learnt about the significance of traditions such as the giving and receiving of red envelopes. We then took part in a dragon dance where we had to work as a team to move the dragon and finally a class lion dance.
