The choir have been out again this week to The Big Sing @ The Glasshouse in Gateshead. We sang our little hearts out to the songs which were played by a live band and we even showcased our dance moves too. Last week we were representing the school at the Different Voices concert at Jarrow Focus so we have really exercised our voices these past few weeks. Very well done Hedworth Lane – you are all super stars !
Our Year 5/6 pupils enjoyed an exciting and enriching day of hands‑on science learning during their visit to the Centre for Life in Newcastle. The trip offered a fantastic blend of discovery, practical investigation and immersive experiences that brought key curriculum topics to life.
Pupils began their day by exploring interactive exhibits that demonstrated how light and sound travel. They experimented with reflection, refraction, vibration and pitch, deepening their understanding through practical investigation. The space exhibits also gave pupils the chance to explore planets, stars and the scale of the universe in a highly engaging way.
A live fossil presentation introduced pupils to the fascinating world of prehistoric life. They examined real specimens and learned how fossils form, what they can tell us about Earth’s past, and how scientists use them to understand evolution and change over time.
One of the highlights of the visit was the planetarium show, where pupils were taken on a guided journey through the night sky. This immersive experience helped them visualise constellations, planetary movement and the wonders of space in a memorable and captivating way.
In the Centre for Life laboratories, pupils took part in a real chemistry session using Bunsen burners and scientific equipment. Under expert guidance, they carried out simple chemical reactions, learned about lab safety, and experienced what it feels like to work as a scientist.
The trip was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to apply their classroom learning in a real scientific environment. Their curiosity, teamwork and enthusiasm shone throughout the day, and they returned to school inspired by the possibilities of science.

🏊♀️ Year 5 & 6 Swimming Gala Success! 🏊♂️
A huge well done to our fantastic team of 10 Year 5 and 6 swimmers who represented Hedworth Lane at yesterday’s swimming gala in Boldon.
The children showed outstanding determination, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the competition, producing some excellent performances in both the individual and relay events. Their hard work paid off as they finished the gala as runners-up – a fantastic achievement that everyone should be incredibly proud of!
At the end of the event, the children voted for the teammate they felt had best represented Hedworth Lane through their effort, encouragement and attitude. Congratulations to Red, who received a special medal after winning her individual race and helping the team secure victory in the girls’ freestyle relay. A brilliant performance and a well-deserved recognition!
Well done to every member of the team for being such wonderful ambassadors for our school. We are all very proud of you! 💙💛

The Arts council had the very difficult job of selecting a winner from each class for this year’s pumpkin carving competition. One of our favourite Hedworth Lane traditions!
The designs get more and more creative each year! Well done everyone for your efforts and ban extra well done to the 11 winners.
We had a lovely walk around Boldon to look for signs of Autumn. We found lots of beautiful coloured leaves of all shapes and sizes.

Class 1 Trip to the Hancock Museum
On Monday, Class 1 enjoyed a fantastic visit to the Hancock Museum in Newcastle as part of our Science topic this term – Evolution and Inheritance.
The highlight of the day was an exciting and interactive workshop all about The Evolution of Humans, where the children explored how humans have changed and adapted over millions of years by looking at replica skulls from throughout the ages. They asked brilliant questions and showed great curiosity about how we connect to our ancient ancestors.
After the workshop, the class explored the museum’s fascinating exhibits. From standing face-to-face with a towering T. Rex, to marvelling at the wonders of Ancient Egypt and Greece, the children were captivated throughout. They particularly enjoyed the sections on animal adaptations and fossils, which linked perfectly with our classroom learning.
It was a brilliant day filled with learning, wonder, and inspiration – and the children were an absolute credit to the school!
