Class 1 Seasonal Soup Making

26th March 2026Karen Simpson

This morning, our children had a fantastic time getting hands-on in the kitchen as part of our Seasonal Fruit and Vegetable DT topic

Class 1 were busy making a delicious pea and mint soup, while Class 2 prepared a warming carrot and ginger soup, and Class 3 created a classic leek and potato.

The classroom was full of excitement (and some amazing smells!) as the children practised important cooking skills such as peeling, chopping and grating. They worked brilliantly together, showing great care and enthusiasm throughout.

The best part… tasting time! The children had the opportunity to try all three soups, evaluating the look and taste of each one and even suggesting their own ideas for improvements.

A wonderful morning of learning, teamwork and creativity – and some budding chefs in the making! 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

Year 6 Safety Works Visit

10th February 2026Karen Simpson

Year 6 Visit to Safety Works, Newcastle

Our Year 6 pupils recently took part in an engaging and highly worthwhile educational visit to Safety Works, an interactive safety centre designed to help children learn how to stay safe in real-life situations.

During the visit, pupils explored a realistic indoor “street” environment and took part in a range of practical workshops. These sessions focused on key areas such as road safety, fire safety, personal safety, and keeping safe in the home and online. Through role play, discussion and hands-on activities, the children were encouraged to think carefully about risks, consequences and making sensible choices.

The workshops linked closely to our PSHE curriculum and were particularly valuable as our pupils prepare for the increased independence that comes with secondary school. The children demonstrated excellent behaviour throughout the day and asked thoughtful, mature questions, showing a real interest in the topics covered.

We would like to thank the staff at Safety Works for delivering such informative and engaging sessions, and our pupils for being fantastic ambassadors for our school. It was a memorable and important learning experience that will help keep our children safe now and in the future.

Class 1 Year 6 Visit to Temple Park Fire Station – RAP Event
On Friday afternoon, our Year 6 pupils visited Temple Park Fire Station to take part in the RAP (Reducing Accidents at Play) event.

During the visit, pupils listened to a range of important safety messages delivered by representatives from Nexus, Northern Powergrid, the RNLI, the Road Safety Team, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, and Northumbria Police.

The sessions helped pupils understand how to stay safe in different situations — at home, near water, on the roads, and in the community. It was an informative and engaging afternoon, and our pupils represented the school brilliantly!

Testing air resistance- Science in Class 1

8th October 2025Karen Simpson

Exploring Air Resistance in Science

In Science this week, pupils investigated air resistance by designing and testing their own parachutes. They experimented with different canopy sizes, string lengths, and canopy shapes to see how each factor affected the parachute’s fall.

This hands-on activity helped pupils understand how air resistance works as a type of friction, linking perfectly with our current topic on forces. There were some fantastic designs and lots of great scientific thinking!

Class 1 Reading Breakfast

28th September 2025Karen Simpson

Class 1’s Reading Breakfast ✨

Class 1 enjoyed a wonderful Reading Breakfast this week! The children began the morning by sharing a story with Mrs Simpson – The Darkest Dark by astronaut Chris Hadfield. This linked perfectly with our upcoming Space topic in Science next half term, as well as our English topic of biographies, where we have been learning all about the legendary astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Afterwards, the children loved snuggling up with their grown-ups to share some of their favourite stories together. It was a fantastic way to celebrate the joy of reading while making lovely connections to our current learning.

Well done, Class 1 – what super readers you are!

Class 1 Science

Class 1 Explore Mass and Gravity

This half term, Class 1 have been busy learning all about Forces. As part of their science work, the children have been investigating the difference between mass and gravity.

Using Newton Meters, they explored how the weight of an object is caused by the pull of gravity on its mass. The children enjoyed measuring a range of objects and comparing their results, helping them to understand that while the mass of an object stays the same, its weight can change depending on gravity.

Everyone showed fantastic curiosity and enthusiasm, asking thoughtful questions and working carefully with the equipment. Well done, Class 1 – brilliant scientists in the making!
