Our Year 3 bench-ballers had a fabulous time at Boldon School, taking part in the inter-school benchball tournament on Wednesday!

Our 3 teams did fantastically well and finished in 1st, 2nd and 2nd across three groups!

They represented Hedworth Lane School superbly and all involved should be very proud of their attitude, skill and behaviour.  Well done superstars!

And thank you to the parent helpers who were fantastic cheering us on and supporting the trip!

10th February 2026Michelle Watson

Year 5 attended their annual dodgeball tournament at Boldon School this week. Team A, B and C thrashed it out against each other and some of the other schools in our area. One of our teams even came home with a medal for all of their hard work and effort.  It was great fun taking part but to come home with a medal was the icing on the cake for some of our pupils…. Well done Hedworth Lane!

Year 5 and 6 had an amazing time performing their slam poems to an audience this morning! Topics ranged from football, Halloween, friends and even fossils!

Students were scored against criteria including clear intonation, eye contact and mimes/gestures. The highest scoring poets performed again trying to elevate their performance. The audience then voted for their favourite via clapometer volume!
Our winner was Zayan with his version of ‘Chocolate Cake’ with Scarlett was our runner up with her passionate poem about all things Disney.

Hedworth Lane celebrate National Coding Week 2025

22nd September 2025Michelle Watson

Pupils in Year 5 and 6 celebrated #NationalCodingWeek2025 this week by taking part in a number of challenges. We learned how to use Binary code to write our own names. Pupils commented on how impossible and tricky it looked at first but we soon got the hang of it. Then later on in the week we took part in a live workshop delivered by Barclays Digital Wings. We learned how to code using Edu Blocks and completed a series of challenges that took us by surprise. We can’t wait for our Lego League topic to start next term now so we can practice our skills even further. Well done everyone.

The Lego Buds and The Shark Heads represent school @ FLL Tournament 2024

15th July 2024Michelle Watson

Two teams entered the First Lego League: Discover Tournament representing Hedworth Lane this year and what a fantastic job they did too! The teams gave up some of their lunchtimes to get competition ready and thought of some excellent ideas to bring their hobbies to as wide an audience as possible using technology. The Lego Buds thought about using VR to make horse riding more accessible to all and The Shark Heads used the idea of synaesthesia to make listening to music a more sensory experience. The walked away with both ‘The Judges Choice’ and ‘The Challenge Solution’ awards on the day too. Brilliant job everyone… Very well done!

Welcome to our brand new Computing Club

3rd May 2024Michelle Watson

Children were delighted to start their new Computing Club here at Hedworth Lane today. All sorts was going on too! We built robots using the Lego Spike kits; we coded a game using the Scratch app and even the Micro:bits came out to play. We are really looking forward to working together over the coming weeks and sharing our expertise with one another. We are also looking forward to rolling out our brand new Chromebooks to the rest of the school and being ambassadors of the technology that we have, making sure that it is always looked after and kept in good shape for everyone to use. Exciting times ahead Hedworth Laners!

JOKE ALERT What did the computer have for his lunch?

He had a mega Byte !

Lego League Champions 🏆

6th March 2024Michelle Watson

Lego League club have worked their socks off during Spring term to come up with an innovative idea for the FLL 2024 competition and today all of their hard work paid off ! The mission was to imagine new ways to create and communicate art across the globe and their idea of making reading accessible to all certainly delivered. We used all of the senses to re imagine the Harry Potter series where you can immerse yourself in the story. The children brought the book to life for the judges helping them to see, touch, hear. smell and even taste the story. The judges said that Hedworth Lane’s idea stood out from the rest and The Lego Hedz walked away with a well deserved trophy on the day. Huge well done everybody! You have made your school very proud 🥇
