Hedworth Lane celebrate National Coding Week 2025

22nd September 2025Michelle Watson

Pupils in Year 5 and 6 celebrated #NationalCodingWeek2025 this week by taking part in a number of challenges. We learned how to use Binary code to write our own names. Pupils commented on how impossible and tricky it looked at first but we soon got the hang of it. Then later on in the week we took part in a live workshop delivered by Barclays Digital Wings. We learned how to code using Edu Blocks and completed a series of challenges that took us by surprise. We can’t wait for our Lego League topic to start next term now so we can practice our skills even further. Well done everyone.

Hedworth Lane Choir shine at The Big Sing!

9th July 2025Karen Simpson

Our fantastic Hedworth Lane Primary School Choir recently had the exciting opportunity to

take part in The Big Sing at The Glasshouse in Gateshead – and what a day it was!

With this year’s theme of Zero Gravity, the children sang their hearts out, performing a range of space-themed songs alongside other schools in a truly uplifting celebration of music. The atmosphere was electric, and the joy of singing together in such a stunning venue was unforgettable.

As well as performing, the choir also enjoyed watching a live concert, experiencing the magic of professional music-making up close.

We didn’t manage to take many photos – we were far too busy singing and having fun! A huge well done to all of our talented singers for representing the school so brilliantly. It was a day to remember!

LEGO Hedz Dive into Innovation at the FLL Tournament 2025!

Our brilliant LEGO Hedz team recently took part in the 2025 FIRST® LEGO® League tournament, hosted at The Word in South Shields — and what an incredible experience it was!

As part of this year’s ocean-themed challenge, the team coded their LEGO submarine to explore the depths of the sea, using colour sensors to navigate their underwater mission. Along the way, they even discovered a brand-new species of sea creature to track at their custom-built Underwater Exploration Station!

Throughout the day, the children showcased fantastic teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience. They shared ideas with other teams, swapped tips, and picked up new coding and robotics skills that will stay with them long after the tournament.

We’re so proud of their creativity, collaboration, and curiosity — well done, LEGO Hedz!

Year 5 Story Walk

3rd July 2025Karen Simpson

Year 5 Enjoy Magical Story Walk with The Word’s Graham

Some of our Year 6 children were treated to a magical story walk around the local area, led by Graham from The Word in South Shields. As they explored familiar streets and green spaces, Graham brought tales to life with his animated storytelling and deep knowledge of folklore.

The children listened with fascination as he retold a classic Brothers Grimm story, capturing their imaginations with its twists and turns. He also shared the folk tale The Stag and the Stork, sparking lively discussions about its meaning and message.

The walk not only encouraged a love of storytelling and oral tradition but also helped the children see their local area in a new light—filled with wonder, history, and inspiration. A big thank you to Graham and The Word for such a memorable experience!
