Year 5 and 6 Stay and Play OPAL

23rd June 2025Karen Simpson

Last Friday afternoon, our Year 5 and 6 pupils enjoyed a wonderful Stay and Play session out on the school field – and we couldn’t have asked for better weather! With the sun shining and spirits high, children and families came together for an afternoon of laughter, games and great company.

From sand pits, mud kitchens and football to ice pops and picnics, there was something for everyone to enjoy. It was lovely to see so many parents and carers joining in, relaxing in the sunshine and spending quality time with their children.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the afternoon so special – it was a fantastic way to celebrate the end of a busy term!

Class 1 Hancock Museum

Class 1 Trip to the Hancock Museum

On Monday, Class 1 enjoyed a fantastic visit to the Hancock Museum in Newcastle as part of our Science topic this term – Evolution and Inheritance.

The highlight of the day was an exciting and interactive workshop all about The Evolution of Humans, where the children explored how humans have changed and adapted over millions of years by looking at replica skulls from throughout the ages. They asked brilliant questions and showed great curiosity about how we connect to our ancient ancestors.

After the workshop, the class explored the museum’s fascinating exhibits. From standing face-to-face with a towering T. Rex, to marvelling at the wonders of Ancient Egypt and Greece, the children were captivated throughout. They particularly enjoyed the sections on animal adaptations and fossils, which linked perfectly with our classroom learning.

It was a brilliant day filled with learning, wonder, and inspiration – and the children were an absolute credit to the school!

Take a look at some of our favourite moments from the day below.

Year 3 and Year 4 Science Buddies

17th June 2025Sarah Wakinshaw

Year 3 and 4 had a fantastic morning with Katie and Holly from Science Buddies. They learnt all about the significance and importance of the Port of Tyne making wind turbines which are destined for Dogger Bank. Did you know Dogger Bank, which is right here in the North Sea will be the world’s largest wind farm once complete? The children were taught how wind farms work, building on their prior knowledge from our electricity science topic and then were challenged to make their own mini turbine blades displaying effective teamwork and problem solving skills. Well done, all! They had great fun testing out their designs using wind from a fan!  They were also left inspired and enthused by the engineering careers available right here in the Northeast, just on their doorstep.

Year 5 Shine at Football Festival! ⚽️
This afternoon, our talented Year 5 pupils took part in an exciting football festival — and what an incredible display of skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship it was! One of our teams emerged as joint winners of their pitch, while another proudly claimed the runners-up spot. Beyond the goals and great results, we were especially proud of the outstanding behaviour and positive attitude shown by all. A huge well done to everyone involved!

HSBC

6th June 2025Claire Hutchinson

We were delighted to welcome Sarah from HSBC into school this week. She delivered sessions to all pupils, developing their financial literacy.  Children in Key Stage 1 learned about the value of money with the character Hoot the Owl. Dotty the Ladybird helped them with their counting. Children in Years 3 and 4 learned how to stay healthy on a budget and  decided whether to spend their money on needs or wants. Our Year 5 and 6 children explored how easy it can be to get carried away spending money through not considering all the added extras involved in a day out. They planned a day out in teams, trying to keep to their budget. Well done to everyone and thank you to Mrs Moad for organising.

No Outsiders at Hedworth Lane

6th June 2025Claire Hutchinson

We were excited to welcome Mr Moffat from “No Outsiders” to our school this week. He delivered a short lesson with every class using a different picture book, encouraging children to think about inclusion and belonging. Make sure to ask your child what the lesson was about when they come home. The children produced some very thoughtful responses to the stories.  We will be using a range of picture books from September to augment our PSHE curriculum. If you would like further information, please contact the office and ask to speak to Mrs Wakinshaw.
