Class 1

Hello and welcome to Class 1! Check out this page each half term to see what the children have been busy with in their lessons.

PE

PE kit is required on Tuesday and Thursdays this half term as we have swimming and dance sessions.  Please be prepared for lessons to be outdoors in all weathers!  Pupils can come to school wearing their kits.

Earrings should not be worn on PE day. If earrings cannot be removed then they should be covered with tape at home.  Thank you.

Arrival of the hoodies!

A Hedworth Lane rite of passage… our hoodies have arrived.  Lots of excitement for these just before the Easter holidays.  Happy days!

Tinkercad Ice Palaces

We took part in a Tinkercad workshop as part of our work in Computing.  Doing this was not only fun and educational, but helped to build our confidence, persistence and problem-solving skills,  We used the Tinkercad app to create 3D designs of castles.  Three lucky Class 3 members were chosen to have their castles printed using the 3D printers at The Word.  Well done Sophia, Brooke and Jazmyn for your super designs.

Bread making in DT

This term we our DT topic has been ‘Food for life’ and we have had a great time making and tasting bread this lesson. We firstly tried some processed bread and thought about the texture and taste as well as the benefits of having the loaf made for you. After that we tried our hand at making our own wholemeal loaf and we evaluated that on texture, taste and the positives and negatives of having to bake it yourself. I know one thing for certain – the corridors of Hedworth Lane Primary have never smelt so good… What a success it was! Check out our pictures below of us making, kneading, proving and eating our own creations.

The Windmill Sambuca

We had a visit to The Windmill Sambuca as part of our DT topic about whole foods.  We had a cooking demonstration by the chef, who showed us how to make three different pasta sauces.  He talked about the ingredients and explained how to cook the sauce to make a healthy pasta meal.  We then got to sample one of the sauces mixed with pasta for our lunch.  We were all well fed and had a great time. Thank you to all of the staff at Sambuca for a fantastic experience!

World Book Day

Homemade soup anyone ?

As part of their DT topic ‘Eat the Seasons’, Year 5 and 6 have been tasting seasonal vegetables and writing recipes this half term. They put their peeling, grating and chopping skills to the test this week and made a pan of delicious homemade vegetable soup that everyone got to taste. The corridors of school were filled with amazing smells and most of us gave the soup a 5 star rating in the evaluation. We even suggested ways that we could improve the soup even more for those who didn’t like it as much. It was great to see everyone helping each other and working together too. What an end result !

Look at the following photographs to see what we have been up to this half term.

National Reading Day

Class 1 felt inspired to read after an assembly to celebrate the National Day of Reading:

Working Collaboratively in PSHE

Enjoying Coding and Programming Using Microbits

Drumming in Class 1

Investigating Water Resistance in Science

Parachute Making to Investigate Air Resistance

French Zig Zag Books

The children have been learning a lot in their French lessons. They have learnt about vocabulary linked to colours and shapes. They have also learnt where to place size and colour adjectives in a French sentence and that feminine nouns must have adjectival agreement.

See their finished work. They were very proud and I was too! Well done.

The Solar System

This week, we have been learning about the eight planets in our solar system. We thought about the sizes of the planets in relation to each other and distances between.

Aristotle’s Observations

The children have been looking at evidence to support the idea that the Earth is a sphere. We carried out our own version Aristotle’s observations of boats on the horizon.

VR Workshop

Class 1 had an amazing time on Tuesday taking part in the VR workshops.

Our topic in Science this half term is Earth and Space. The workshop took them on a journey through space.

The following information about the workshop is taken from the Education Group website:

Every child in the class becomes an astronaut

Virtual Reality transports you to places you cannot easily visit. The whole class simultaneously blasts off into space, piloting their research vessels around planets and moons, learning about the solar system.

Our facilitators provide a fully-networked class set of headsets, delivering our own software, CGI and games. This incredible immersive experience truly boosts learning and fact retention.

With this fascinating workshop, perhaps we will inspire the next generation of scientists and astronauts who may one day blast off into space for real!
