Arrival of the hoodies!
A Hedworth Lane rite of passage… our hoodies have arrived. Lots of excitement for these just before the Easter holidays. Happy days!
Stronger Shores
Class 2 had a visit from Blair Watson from Stronger Shores. This was truly excellent timing as we had been earning all about ocean plastics and pollution. We learned about climate change and some of the projects that people like Blair are undertaking to save our shores. At the end, we made some ‘alternative plastic’ using kelp. It’s sad to know the state of our oceans and seas but good to know that people are working hard to make a change for the better and we can too!
World Book Day 2025
We thoroughly enjoyed dressing up for World Book Day. We thought about our favourite books and authors from the school year so far, making some book covers and writing reviews. Well done all!
Science – Building Electrical Circuits
Excitement was high when the electrical components arrived in class. We thought of some questions we’d like the answer to e.g. What happens if I put two bulbs in a circuit? Is brightness / sound different when the wire is longer? We then worked together in groups to find out the answers. A good time was had by all!
Dogs Trust Visit – ABCs
We were visited by Rachel from Dogs Trust who shared a presentation with us all about staying safe with dogs. We talked about the ABCs of dog safety and understood what types of affection we can show a dog and when is the best time to do it. We found out that we should always allow the dog the freedom to leave whenever they want and not to cuddle or kiss dogs. Rachel taught us the signs to look for when a dog might be worried or scared and in need of some space.
Northumbria Police – The Internet and Us
We were visited by Suzanne Mills from Northumbria Police who shared a presentation with us all about staying safe online. We talked a lot about social media, responsibilities around sharing images and videos and looked at some scenarios to see what we would do if ever we were faced with them.
The Internet and Us
Tinkercad
We took part in a Tinkercad workshop as part of our work in Computing. Doing this was not only fun and educational, but helped to build our confidence, persistence and problem-solving skills, We used the Tinkercad app to create 3D designs of castles. Three lucky Class 2 members were chosen to have their castles printed using the 3D printers at The Word. Well done Dalia, James and Billy for your super designs.

Bread making in DT
This term we our DT topic has been ‘Food for life’ and we have had a great time making and tasting bread this lesson. We firstly tried some processed bread and thought about the texture and taste as well as the benefits of having the loaf made for you. After that we tried our hand at making our own wholemeal loaf and we evaluated that on texture, taste and the positives and negatives of having to bake it yourself. I know one thing for certain – the corridors of Hedworth Lane Primary have never smelt so good… What a success it was! Check out our pictures below of us making, kneading, proving and eating our own creations.
We had a visit to The Windmill Sambuca as part of our DT topic about whole foods. We had a cooking demonstration by the chef, who showed us how to make three different pasta sauces. He talked about the ingredients and explained how to cook the sauce to make a healthy pasta meal. We then got to sample one of the sauces mixed with pasta for our lunch. We were all well fed and had a great time. Thank you to all of the staff at Sambuca for a fantastic experience!
We had a visitor – Katie – from Science Buddies! She brought in some lamb hearts and we had a great time dissecting them and learning even more about our circulatory system topic.
Sunita from ‘The Indian Experience’ visited our school. We dressed in traditional clothes and performed some Diwali dances.
See our entries for the pumpkin competition. Can you guess which one won?
We completed our explanation writing unit of work in English based on butterfly lifecycles. We then released our newly-emerged friends back to nature on a lovely, sunny day!
As part of our work in Science, we made blood!

We had a Class 2 Reading Breakfast / Meet the teacher session. It was great – plenty of books, scones and biscuits!
