Seasonal Outdoor Sessions
Class 3 went outside this afternoon to do some work in our outdoor area. It linked nicely to our topic ‘Eat the seasons’ so we decided to do some seasonal planting. Some of us went into our brand new polytunnel to plant the seeds and place them into a sunny position to germinate whilst we are busy in school (we will check back over the next few weeks to see how they’re getting on). Others started the job of digging over the soil in one of our planters. A few children took up the role of rubbish collector and another carried wheelbarrows full of garden waste over to the compost area. After digging over the area, we decided to plant some peas directly into the soil. We found out that peas like to climb so we built mini structures to help them once they appear. We even identified some unusual looking plants using a plant identifier app. Overall, a great outdoor session which ended up with a group photo for our Class page. Amazing effort everyone !
Our Future Careers
Pupils at Hedworth Lane had a brilliant day on Friday as we all dressed up as our future careers. We had a some of our parents come into assembly and talk about what they did at work and how they managed to secure their dream jobs. The children asked some fantastic questions and made some really positive reflections in their Careers journals. A few things that really stood out were that you don’t have to make the decision right now and also that you can use different qualifications for different jobs which put some of the children’s minds who were still unsure what they wanted to be when they grew up. We gad a fantastic selection of careers that came in including an accountant, a dog walker, a mountain rescuer, a storm chaser and a make-up artist to name but a few… Check out the pics from the day below.
Pancake Day Flipathon
What a great day we had this pancake day doing our sponsored flipathon. The children all had a 60 second turn to see how many flips we could fit in. It was so much fun we forgot to take everybody’s photograph as we were too busy counting and cheering each other on. Well done Class 3!
Celebrating Safer Internet Day 2026
Class 3 took part in South Tyneside’s Safer Internet 2026 event this year by joining the ICT in Schools team for a high-energy, live, online interactive quiz! The event was designed to test pupils’ “Internet Street Smarts” in a fun, competitive, and educational environment. Your children joined hundreds of others across our region to see who would be crowned the “Internet Safety Champions”. We were joint first with some of the other schools scoring the maximum points available 30/30 ! What a smart and safe bunch of browsers we have here at Hedworth Lane. Well done everybody!
Class 3 had a brilliant time at The Hancock museum in Newcastle looking at fossils and exploring how different species of animal have evolved over time. We took part in a workshop called 99% ape where we made a timeline of how the different animal skulls, which are similar to ours, have evolved over time. We made lots of observations based on size and shape and the children did a brilliant job of putting them in order. – one of the skulls was approximately 33 million years old ! Fantastic job everyone what a brilliant day…
Spectacular Spectrums
As part of this term’s science topic ‘Visible Light’ Class 3 made spinning colour wheels so that we could see the spectrum of colours merge together into the visible white light colour that we are used to. The children gasped with delight as they spun their creations and witnessed the colours merging together with their own eyes. Well done everyone ! We had to use a lot of skills to make these spinning wheels and you all did it with ease.
Arrival of the hoodies!
A Hedworth Lane rite of passage… our hoodies have arrived. Lots of excitement for these just before the Easter holidays. Happy days!
Tinkercad Ice Palaces
We took part in a Tinkercad workshop as part of our work in Computing. Doing this was not only fun and educational, but helped to build our confidence, persistence and problem-solving skills, We used the Tinkercad app to create 3D designs of castles. Three lucky Class 3 members were chosen to have their castles printed using the 3D printers at The Word. Well done Sophia, Brooke and Jazmyn for your super designs.
Bread making in DT
This term we our DT topic has been ‘Food for life’ and we have had a great time making and tasting bread this lesson. We firstly tried some processed bread and thought about the texture and taste as well as the benefits of having the loaf made for you. After that we tried our hand at making our own wholemeal loaf and we evaluated that on texture, taste and the positives and negatives of having to bake it yourself. I know one thing for certain – the corridors of Hedworth Lane Primary have never smelt so good… What a success it was! Check out our pictures below of us making, kneading, proving and eating our own creations.
The Windmill Sambuca
We had a visit to The Windmill Sambuca as part of our DT topic about whole foods. We had a cooking demonstration by the chef, who showed us how to make three different pasta sauces. He talked about the ingredients and explained how to cook the sauce to make a healthy pasta meal. We then got to sample one of the sauces mixed with pasta for our lunch. We were all well fed and had a great time. Thank you to all of the staff at Sambuca for a fantastic experience!
The Miracle of Metamorphosis
This term in our English topic we have been learning about life cycles and in particular the life cycle of a butterfly. We have really enjoyed watching our class caterpillars grow considerably during the eating and growing stage and we were excited to see them enter the chrysalis stage too where metamorphosis was taking place. This week we have had the pleasure of watching our beautiful butterflies emerge from their pupas and get ready to fly off into the wider world. Some of the children in class 3 even got to hold the butterflies although they were quite shy and timid. We have loved being the proud parents of these amazing creatures and have learned so much…!
Soy Feliz Asi
Class 3 accepted the North East Festival of Languages challenge this term to sing the song Happy by Pharrell Williams in a different language. We managed to upload our entry bang on the deadline date and we will wait patiently to see the final YouTube video once it has been edited and released. Scan the QR code below to see us in action and we will keep you updated on when you can see the final cut ! We are definitely a happy bunch… Huge well done to you all!
Egg-cellent entries
Check out this year’s entries for our annual Easter egg decorating competition. We had lots of fun getting crafty and we did a sterling job of tidying up too our teacher said. Big shout out to Connor who won first prize and Erin and Emme who were our runners up. Well done everyone !
Line, Light and Shade
Class 3 have been using different sketching techniques this term. We have drawn in the style of Picasso and today the children used their knowledge to create sketches of their own. They then used ink to finalise their masterpieces. We have chosen a selection of artwork that we think will blow you away. Well done everyone !

Homemade soup anyone ?
As part of their DT topic ‘Eat the Seasons’, Year 5 and 6 have been tasting seasonal vegetables and writing recipes this half term. They put their peeling, grating and chopping skills to the test this week and made a pan of delicious homemade vegetable soup that everyone got to taste. The corridors of school were filled with amazing smells and most of us gave the soup a 5 star rating in the evaluation. We even suggested ways that we could improve the soup even more for those who didn’t like it as much. It was great to see everyone helping each other and working together too. What an end result !
We are internet legends !!!
UKS2 took part in this year’s Be Internet Legends Day #BILD2023
We talked about the different ways that you can be kind online and the children came up with some fantastic ideas and suggestions. Big shout out Hedworth Laners! You are all legends in our eyes ✨
A trip into Space
What a treat we had this week in Science! We have been learning all about Earth and Space and we got the chance to travel there virtually using the power of VR. The gasps and wows prompted the teachers to down red pens and even have a go themselves… It was quite literally out of this world !!
Deck the halls (and the classroom)
Christmas has arrived here in Class 3 as the children got to make their own fabulous eco Christmas tree decorations today. We practised our weaving skills and also tried to very patiently thread the wool onto a needle. It was worth all of the effort just to see their fabulous designs at the end. Check them out below. Well done Class 3 !
Pneumatic inventions
Class 3 had their inventor hats on this morning. They have been researching and using pneumatics as part of their DT topic and have designed a prototype for ‘something useful that can be used around the house’. We had some excellent designs including; a portable bin, a sawdust machine for hamsters and even a sweet dispenser. Check out our fabulous creations below. Well done KS2 !
What do computers eat ? Micro:Chips
Hedworth Lane pupils in Year 5 and 6 were in for a treat this week when The OpenZone @ The Word in South Shields came in to deliver a session based on Micro:Bits. The children brought coding to life for the afternoon by making all sorts of interesting games and gadgets including a dice, a Magic 8 Ball, a name badge and a ‘Love-o-Meter’ amongst others. We were so impressed by all of the things you can do with these clever little pieces of equipment. Our school cannot wait until our very own Micro:Bits arrive so we can play around with them some more…
Golden Time Greats !
Check out this fabulous robotic build by one of our pupils during Golden Time this week. Absolutely awesome !
